    • Welcome to the boardroom! We hope you find your new role interesting and rewarding.

      Maybe you've just been elected to a community radio station board for the first time, or perhaps you're a new staff member at a station who has to work closely with the board. Either way, you're going to need to understand the ins and outs of non-profit governance: how decisions are made, who does what and when, which laws affect you, and where to go for help. 

      Community radio might seem like the kind of place where "anything goes", a place to get away from the hidebound rules of mainstream life. Don't let the freewheeling atmosphere of the DJ booth fool you! Behind the scenes, a community radio station is run just like any other organization, with many rules, regulations, and procedures that must be followed if the station isn't going to collapse into chaos. Key to it all is the board of directors. 

      In this course you'll learn:

      • what a board of directors is, and why every organization needs one;
      • what a non-profit organization is, and which laws govern it;
      • what fiduciary duties you must adhere to on a board;
      • who the officers of the board are;
      • how the board works through committees
      • how to enjoy your time on a board of directors, despite all the responsibilities
